Early-Stage Researcher (ESR) position for the development of Digital Twin models for power grids (RS)

Join an international team of engineering experts developing the world`s leading test equipment for power electronics and power distribution systems that plays the decisive role in the process of digitalization, decentralization and decarbonization of the world’s electricity supply, all while being enrolled in a PhD program.

Your main responsibility will be development of digital twin models for power grids. The increasing complexity of the power grids due to the increasing use of renewable generation and information technologies calls for an efficient simulation environment of the full cyber-physical power system (CPPS) environment. As an ESR, you will develop the CPPS model libraries and supporting functions within the Typhoon HIL real time simulation environment, allowing for Digital Twin simulation of an actual power grid and cyber-physical HIL testing.

Responsibilities:
Implementation of the latest communication protocols within the modeling environment, such as IEC61850;
Development of customizable component protection and control functions, as well as system protection functions;
Establishment of real time power flow tools;
Development of a programming environment for incorporating artificial intelligence methods.

Qualifications:
Proven interest in interdisciplinary and intersectoral research, with specific interest in areas such as grid modernization, grid emulation (such as digital twin development), and/or power system modeling (grid protection, communication, renewable energy, etc.);
Obtained Master’s degree or equivalent;
Excellent academic record (grades of B or higher) and good command of English (minimum C1 or equivalent);
Engineering background relevant to the following areas but not limited to: information science, energy systems engineering, or social science.

You will be a full-time employee of our office in Novi Sad, Republic of Serbia, as a part of the InnoCyPES project for a duration of 36 months. During this period you will be enrolled in a PhD program with DTU, and spend the first 10 of these months in Denmark. The program is part of an Innovative Training Network, includes research advisors from both DTU and NTNU, and collaboration opportunities with all InnoCyPES partner institutions across Europe.

An important note about this position is that you must have lived and worked outside Serbia for 2 of the last 3 years. Also, you must be an early-stage researcher, which means at the date of start, you are in the first four years (full-time equivalent research experience) of your research career and have not been awarded a doctoral degree.

Additionally, you must not have resided or carried out your main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of the host institute for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before the recruitment date. Compulsory national service, short stays such as holidays, and time spent as part of a procedure for obtaining refugee status under the Geneva Convention are not taken into account. Lastly, you must not have spent more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before the recruitment date at Typhoon HIL.

Expected start date is November 2021.
