China`s innovative solar grazing greens arid grasslands and power a sustainable future Oct 9, 2026 - A 930 million yuan ($130.99 million USD) solar-grazing sand control project in Sonid Right Banner, Inner Mongolia, has turned arid grasslands green while generating clean energy. Spanning over 7,000 mu with 350,000 solar panels and a 200,000 kW installed capacity, the BOE-backed facility elevated its solar panels to 1.5 meters high to allow sheep to graze beneath them safely. The panels shade the soil from harsh sunlight and wind, drastically reducing moisture evaporation to foster grass growth, while sheep droppings fertilize the ground in a green ecological loop. Generating 350 million kWh of electricity annually and cutting CO2 emissions by over 250,000 metric tons, the project has raised local vegetation coverage to 80%. It was selected as a representative case study for the COP17 of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD). Official UNCCD reports commended the practice for transforming corporate mindsets from "reducing land impact" to "creating net land gains," offering a scalable template for global arid regions.
