Collaborating for Summer Grid Reliability Jul 10, 2025 - The power grid is more than just wires, switches, and power generators. It`s a coordinated network of people and organizations working together every day to keep electricity moving safely and reliably across the region. Think of the bulk power system like a network of highways. ISO New England manages the flow of electricity across the six-state region, like directing traffic across major interstates. Just as cars exit highways onto local roads, electricity leaves the bulk power system and moves along to the distribution system to reach homes and businesses. The distribution system is operated by transmission companies, with seven local control centers (LCCs) that are staffed, like the ISO’s control room, 24 hours a day. In this ISO Minute, Jon Gravelin, senior manager of Control Room Operations, explains how the ISO works closely with the LCCs as well as neighboring grid operators to maintain the reliability of the power grid.
