When China`s State Grid powers Brazil Nov 28, 2024 - China`s presence in the Global South through infrastructure projects under the Belt and Road Initiative has boosted economic development and improved the livelihoods of millions. With China`s influence in Latin America increasingly under scrutiny, how can synergy between China and the continent be achieved? In this edition of The Hub, Wang Guan goes to the State of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil to find out about a substation along the Belo Monte-Rio de Janeiro Transmission Line Project, a 800kV ultra-high-voltage direct current (UHVDC) line built by State Grid Corporation of China, that transmits electricity from the Belo Monte hydroelectric power plant in the Para State in the north to the Rio State. The 2,500-km long project is the world`s longest UHVDC transmission line, with many "firsts" showcasing China`s technological prowess and innovation. Wang Guan talked to some of the protagonists from China and Brazil involved in this project to know more about this "energy superhighway" that powers some 70 percent of the Rio State, one of Brazil`s most developed region, and brings substantial benefits to people and industries.
