Russia ships equipment for Turkey’s Akkuyu nuclear plant

Russia’s Atommash has shipped the first components for the Turkish Akkuyu nuclear power plant being built by state nuclear corporation Rosatom.

The Volgodonsk Branch of AEM Technologies (part of Rosatom’s Engineering Division - Atomenergomash) has manufactured and shipped embedded parts for a steam generator for unit 1 of Akkuyu NPP. The shipment, which weighed 130 tons, was delivered by road using eight transport units, traveling a distance of 2500km.

The Akkuyu NPP includes four power units with VVER-1200 generation 3+ reactors. To date, the project is funded by Russia. The construction of Akkuyu NPP is the first nuclear project in the world implemented using a Build-Own-Operate model.

The same day, Russia’s Uralkhimmash said it had signed a significant contract, worth more than $43.6m, for the production and supply of equipment for Akkuyu NPP.

Earlier Rosatom said it has stepped up the training of staff for the Akkuyu project and carrying out the exercise in conjunction with nuclear utility Rosenergoatom. Theoretical training will be carried out by specialists at Rosatom’s technical academy, and Rosenergoatom will oversee simulator training and internships at the Novovoronezh II. Rosatom said 72 Turkish specialists underwent training last year and this year it plans to train at least 120, including about 20 as operational personnel.
